Doo-wop is a genre of rhythm and blues music that was developed in African-American communities in the East Coast of the United States in the s, achieving mainstream popularity in the s and early s.
Built upon vocal harmony, doo-wop was one of the most mainstream, pop-oriented styles of the time. Doo-wop features vocal group harmony, nonsense syllables, a simple beat, sometimes little or no instrumentation, and simple music and lyrics. Lillian Leach, lead singer of the Mellows from to , helped pave the way for women and is often cited as an influence by later performers. Other important groups, including The Coasters, The Drifters, The Midnighters, and The Platters, helped link the doo-wop style to the mainstream, and to the future sound of soul music. Joe has listened to so much doo-wop it is now just part of him, he has no choice.

Bill Callahan born June 3, is an American singer-songwriter and guitarist who has also recorded and performed under the band name Smog. Callahan began working in the lo-fi genre of underground rock, with home-made tape-albums recorded on four track tape recorders. Later he began releasing albums with the label Drag City, to which he remains signed today. Callahan started out as a highly experimental artist, using substandard instruments and recording equipment.
His early songs often nearly lacked melodic structure and were clumsily played on poorly tuned guitars, resulting in the dissonant sounds on his self-released cassettes and debut album Sewn to the Sky. Much of his early output was instrumental, a stark contrast to the lyrical focus of his later work. Once he signed a contract with Drag City, he started to use recording studios and a greater variety of instruments for his records.
His singing is characterized by his baritone voice. Melodically and lyrically he tends to eschew the verse-chorus approach favoured by many contemporary songwriters, preferring instead a more free-form approach relying less on melodic and lyrical repetition. So, the character appears in all or most of the songs on one record and then is gone. Though it makes me feel weird to talk about. My albums as a whole could be seen as one character with many voices. Both recordings were released through Drag City, worldwide.
