Here are fourteen duets, performed with singers who have their own unique voice, each adds his or her personal touch to the duet. This stands out as something particularly special here. I think it's to do with the fact that she doesn't try to blow out the song, but captures its emotion with lightness. It's the distinct way that she articulates the words with clarity and the timbre of her voice.
It is also a song where Paul Anka allows more emotion through in his own singing. In addition, Dolly weaves in her delicate, but distinctive backing vocal as he sings his part.
Her delicate touch adds to the song. Some of the duets seem locked in the sixties and seventies and although very polished and professional, there is a datedness to them. The Dolly Parton treatment helps the song out of this rut despite the cresendo build up at the end.
I also liked the duet with Patti LaBelle, You are my destiny, I think she brings something with her excellent vocals, though again, it has a certain period dusting it. Crazy with Willie Nelson is notable for his simplicity, remembering that Nelson penned this song which was a hit for Patsy Cline. Again Nelson adds that Country clarity, It's interesting to have Michael Jackson for the collection and he sounded good. I mention only a few, but in fact the are all excellent. Just a little comment.
Duet chemistry is hard to find and I think in particular with Paul Anka, he is more of a solo singer, not a natural duet singer in the way of spinning the voices together. I think a few of the duet partners as mentioned, break that mould a little and improve the CD as a result. I give the five stars as it cannot be faulted for suave sophistication. It's what people expect from him. I bought it as I thought it was interesting to hear other voices also treat the songs. Paul Anka's "Duets" is a delightful disc.
While not every track hits the mark for me, most of them do. And there are some delightful gems here. I had read a professional review saying how old fashioned this music is, but this track is great contemporary pop to my ear.
Peter Cetera joins Paul on vocals on a number co-written with David Foster on the sentimental ballad, "I'm the one who said we're through, I can't live without you anymore. This is a strong set from Paul Anka. We recently saw him in person and went home and ordered this CD that we did not have.
Disappointed with the listening value! Sorry for the purchase but we will keep it as the price was not expensive. One person found this helpful. Sound quality is great. Some of the songs he sang with other artists may be a little different from the original because of the different instruments used in this version but I think some of the them sound better because they're just a touch more updated.
I recommend this CD. I listen to it all the time! I buy a lot of CD's when singers have duets with other singers. I like that a lot. And I remember Paul Anka from some of his popular songs in the past. The songs were not interesting and I couldn't even recognize the voices of the singers who were singing with him.
For shame. I'm giving this CD away. My father took me to see this man in concert for a hospital benefit 25 years ago I was 30yr old He blew me away, I was so grateful for the experience. I never knew, Dolly Parton could sing like this! Enjoy the REAL music, not computerized crap. The outstanding Leon Russell is a thrill to hear Honestly, the song choices and awesome vocals, blow away Tony Bennet's duets CD's More thought seems to have been put into this CD.

Verified Purchase. This collection looks great on paper, but all the songs from the s are re-recordings, not the original versions.
They still sound very good, but they don't tell you it's not the original recordings until you read the liner notes. That causes me to dock this set a full two stars. If I were a fan of the early hits I'm not , this would bother me. But I'm more a fan of the s hits, and they're all here in their original versions. This is just want I wanted. It not only has his hits but in the case of the song, "Breaking up is Hard to Do", it has the fast and the slow version.
The slow version is sooo good. Also, Sedaka has his daughter, Dara sing with him on a couple of other songs and their harmony is perfect. One of the songs is, "I should have Never let you go". Other great songs are, "I miss the hunger years" and "Solitare". Great album. It's easy to write Sedaka off as someone who mainly sung pleasant but puerile songs such as Happy Birthday Sweet Sixteen and Calendar Girl. But he is so much more.
Of course, there's the Immigrant, which is an unabashed, unmitigated gush about diversity--you'll either love or hate it. But my very favorite is a profoundly sad and honest song: Going Nowhere. It is one of the few admissions in writing let alone in music that your best efforts may well not be enough--you'll end up "Going Nowhere.
And on my bad days as an adult, the aforementioned "Going Nowhere. As has been stated in another review, Neil's early hits as presented here, are re-recordings, not the originals. Not that they aren't done very well, they are, but if you're looking for the original versions, this is not the CD for you.
This wasn't exactly the work I was seeking, but I liked it, and I'll play it again. When it comes to music, I'm a sucker for sincerity, and Neil delivers the goods here. First off, I'm a big Neil Sedaka fan. I really think that this man went through a lot in his life and persevered through it all. So, on this collection of his hits, I read many reviews that were not so kind. It is understandable.
Yes, they are correct when they say that his earlier hits from the 50's and 60's were rerecorded. Here is why that is.
Originally, Neil started his career with RCA records. After those golden years he took some time off to do other projects, mainly writing songs for others.
He was not in his prime anymore in the late 60's and his final album with RCA was a big flop. So, he was quiet for some time, when Elton John discovered he was not under contract to a record label.
Starting a record company of his own in the mid 70's, called Rocket Records, he signed his good friend up. He then made a major comeback and released such hits as: Bad Blood, Laughter in the Rain, The Immigrant, and Breaking up is hard to do Slow Version , all plus many other new songs that are on this CD in original form. They own the rights to his older music.
Of course Neil was not going to give up his rights to the new sons, which he owned. So, he had to rerecord his old songs and put them on this collection with the original recordings of his newer songs. Here is my suggestion. Just simply create your own CD and you are good. This is what I did and I now have all his hits.
There are NO CD's out there with all his original recordings on one compilation collection. Wrong CD.
