Simply put there is precious little smoke in this package at all let alone any real fire. I was just a little disappointed, to say the least as a rule Wishbone are a pretty steady group when it comes to quality and ability to produce a good product.
However everyone can miss the mark every once in a while. That isn't to say that there isn't any bright moments on this disc, in fact there are a few great cuts but not enough to make this worth owning as far as I am concerned.
Wishbone Ash has managed to put out so many great discs in the past that I simply took it for granted that this would follow in the tradition Do not buy based upon history it will only separate you from your cash. I have been surprised in the past with even their live recordings which turned out as good as their concerts there are so many other great discs by Wishbone Ash that listing them here would take up far too much space, better to list the bad ones and I shall start with this one, keep your cash and invest in other discs if you have never heard it buy ARGUS it is their signature disc I also love Pilgrimage, and the last one I shall put in here because of space is THERE IS THE RUB it also is awesome Clan Destiny.

WA wanted to stay true to their sound while staying current. WA managed to do a great progressive rock album for its day with this disc Now this is more like it. After putting out some really inconsistent material through much of the mid 70's the band came back artistically in a big way for this album.
I don't own all of the Laurie Wisefield era releases, but of the ones I have, I like this one by far the best. There is no filler to be found here as the band courts a more generally rocking sound with the Twin Guitars in the spotlight much of the time. These two tracks will remind fans of just why they got into this band in the first place. From a sales perspective Wishbone Ash had fallen way off from where they were early in the decade and had practically disappeared in America, which is too bad, because this album should have been a big comeback for them.
Of the Ash albums I own I rank this one only behind the band's debut and "Argus" for quality. If you are an Ash fan and don't own this one, I would say it is an essential purchase. I've been a fan of Wishbone Ash since their self-titled debut album but somehow lost track of the band after Argus.
Both the song-writing and performances are outstanding. Indeed, there is not a bad track on the album. Not a one. Laurie Wisefield's monumental Stand and Deliver does just that and is simply magnificent to name only one of them.
It's classic extended guitar-riffing ASH at its finest and should be part of the band's regular touring repertoire hint-hint! Front Page News is the eighth album by rock band Wishbone Ash. It is mostly made up of slower, breezy soft rock ballads with lush vocal harmonies.
This style is in marked contrast to the earlier albums such as Argus , but there were several tracks of this idiom on their immediately preceding studio albums, Locked In and New England. It has some fine guitar work, but the main hook is weak and inadequate.
We are quickly back on track though with "Anger in harmony", which features a striking change of tempo midway to play out with a spirited twin guitar jam. The slower acoustic opening vocal section eventually gives way to a lengthy upbeat guitar jam. It is undoubtedly significant that the return of Derek Lawrence's to the producer's chair coincided with what is Wishbone Ash's finest album since "Argus".
In many ways this is in fact the belated follow up to that magnificent album. While "No smoke without fire" is not quite of the same standard, it is an unjustly forgotten album in the band's back pages. The progressive leanings are basically concentrated to the last two tracks which go together as one here it is apparantly listed as one long track but on my album it is divided into parts 1 and 2. It is a great song, but hardly a prog epic. A very good melodic hard rock album with some slight progressive touches. No Smoke Without Fire is the ninth studio album by rock band Wishbone Ash. It was the first album since 's Argus to be produced by Derek Lawrence. It was also the heaviest Wishbone Ash album in years, featuring rockers like the hit single "You See Red" and the multi-part epic "The Way of the World." The album peaked at No. 43 in the UK Albums Chart.
